Newport Hospitality Group Opens Residence Inn Blacksburg in Blacksburg, Virginia

Williamsburg, VA and Blacksburg, VA: (September 27, 2017) Newport Hospitality Group Inc., (NHG) a leading hotel management company, has opened the Residence Inn Blacksburg-University on September 8, 2017, located next to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

This Residence Inn features 126 rooms and suites, and is the newest property in the fast-growing Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford metropolitan area. Built on a site previously occupied by a hotel that had outlived its intended use, this new property’s main driver of demand is its proximity to the university which has grown to surround the location.

Prior to opening the Residence Inn Blacksburg-University, NHG also built the Hyatt Place Blacksburg/University on the same site. This hotel debuted to the public in May 2017 and is already highly successful under NHG’s ongoing management. The construction of both branded properties involved the demolition of the existing structure followed by a full redevelopment of the underlying site, which included the building of the two new hotels as well as 39,000 square feet of combined retail space with CVS as an anchor store partner.

To ensure that this project would be a resounding success, NHG teamed with two Virginia Tech alumni – development partners Kirk Johnson and Shivon Dosky – so that the local needs were thoroughly understood from very early on in the planning phase. The combined team worked tirelessly over several years to assess several development scenarios before finally settling on a mixed-use, hotel-retail plan. Once the vision was finalized, NHG then complemented this regional knowledge by sourcing the general contractor and designers.

Over its 26-year history, NHG has been intricately involved in the development of numerous hotels, leading the design, building and opening processes. These development projects have been spearheaded by Newport’s CEO, Andrew Carey, who has built a team of design and construction experts capable of delivering the most complex projects.

Lexy Hammonds Joins Sean Patrick Cannon’s Hollywood Tale ‘Girl Games’

2017 WTCF Los Angeles Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit Kicks Off, World Tourism City Development Shifts to High Gear in the New Era of Globalization

September 21st, 2017, Los Angeles – WTCF Los Angeles Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit 2017 was held on the September 19. The Summit, themed “Impact of Globalization on World Tourism City Development”, attracted about 400 delegates from 51 countries and 87 cities. A total of 37 ministers and mayors, senior managers from international tourism organization and representatives from international organization including UNWTO and PATA were invited to attend the summit.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Mr. Ernest Wooden Jr., Vice-Chairman of WTCF Council and President and CEO of Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board. Chen Jining, Chairman of WTCF Council and acting Mayor of Beijing; Li Jinzao, Chairman of China National Tourism Administration; Zhu Shanzhong, Executive Director of UNWTO; and Mr. Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles delivered remarks at the ceremony.

Song Yu, Secretary-General of WTCF; Ms. Pia Riika Birgitta Pakarinen, Vice Mayor of Helsinki; Karl Wöber, Director of the Expert Committee of WTCF; and Jeanie Buss, Controlling Owner and President of the Los Angeles Lakers made keynote speeches under the theme of “Globalization and its Impact on World Tourism City Development”.

In his remarks, Chen Jining, Chairman of WTCF Council and Acting Mayor of Beijing, expressed his hope that a deeper understanding of globalization would be obtained through the insightful discussions during the summit. He also noted that a more open collaborative platform should be built as a result of the summit to promote a more inclusive and balanced globalization in favor of robust tourism growth worldwide.

19 new members were sworn into WTCF at the opening ceremony where promotional films featuring the world tourism city data platform and tourism investment guide were released. Mrs. Raisa Banfiled, Vice-Mayor of Panama City, delivered a speech on behalf of all new members.

During the ceremony, the Los Angeles Declaration of World Tourism Cities Federation was unveiled. Under the theme of globalization and collaborative development of world tourism cities, the declaration makes the following six-point proposal to all its members: 1) further boost the tourism industry worldwide; 2) improve tourism service quality across the world; 3) facilitate a collaborative and balanced development of world tourism; 4) make tourism service more accessible and efficient; 5) build up security to assure tourists; 6) effectively protect tourism resources.

Three bid cities made presentation to the Council Meeting, and city of Helsinki was finally chosen to host the WTCF Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit 2019. 

During this Summit, events such as the tourism exhibition, tourism trade and investment fair and tourism promotion meeting were held by WTCF to facilitate better communication and collaboration among its members who were able to showcase innovate tourism products and explore new market potential.

The Tourism Investment Fair, co-hosted by the Committee of Investment, the Sub-Committee of WTCF, and the World Trade Center Los Angeles allowed participants to engage in efficient dialogue and cooperation opportunities between famous Chinese tourism and their counterparts from Spain and the US. During the tourism trade fair, 17 of the top 20 Chinese enterprises including CITS, CYTS, CTS, BTG, Ctrip and Tuniu.com had exchanges with nearly 100 enterprises from L. A. and others.

During the press briefings, tripartite agreements were signed by WTCF and with Helsinki, Tencent, Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, Qingdao Tourism Development Committee, and Xiamen Airlines. WTCF will continue to promote win-win development between and among cities and institutions and build a wider platform for all members.

Four themed forums of the summit will be held the on following day. The topics of the four themed forums are “Solutions to Challenges Faced by Tourism Cities, Competitive Strengths and Brand Building of Tourism Cities, Policy Environment Promotes Tourism Investment, and China’s Outbound Tourism: New Trend and Market Dynamics”. Mayors from tourism cities, executives from tourism institutions, and scholars are invited to discuss the most concerned topics such as travel security, brand marketing, advantages of infrastructure and resources, investment, etc.

The Research Report on World Tourism City Development 2017 and UNWTO-WTCF City Tourism Performance Research is scheduled to be released during the 2017 Summit. The former aims to steer world tourism development along the modern, standardized, and collaborative path by analyzing individual cases of tourism cities and benchmarking evaluation criteria.

UNWTO and WTCF jointly launched the City Tourism Performance Research in 2016. The research is an instrument with a set of criteria that could be used globally to benchmark tourism performance. So far, case studies conducted in 16 sample cities have been completed, which lead to the discovery of25 profound issues that may determine the development of world tourism cities.

2017 WTCF Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit has won WTCF worldwide acclaim by exhibiting its quality service, superb leadership, and increasing influence on its members and the global tourism industry. When PIM Gets Really Complicated

Product information management for conglomerates can be devilishly difficult, but there are ways to do it right, say experts at Earley Information Science roundtable

It’s hard enough to design and implement a “garden variety” product information management (PIM) program. Even at a single-line company with a straightforward structure and limited market reach, it’s just not that easy to figure out product names, determine which attributes to tout and organize everything into an effective system—and somehow also win consensus from various stakeholders along the way.  

But the challenges, and potential pitfalls, are exponentially greater at conglomerates and other complex decentralized enterprises, where PIM may have to function as a shared platform across numerous operating units, or even separate companies, in any number of markets or perhaps all around the world. Consensus in this context has to be reached despite yawning differences in processes, priorities, products and services.

The task is formidable, so much so that you have to ask whether there are too many variations to support “one system of record,” says Dino Eliopulos, Managing Director of Earley Information Science (EIS). “What are the limits to the value of supporting a centralized system? Can so many different business units all standardize on a single PIM model?”

The do’s and don’ts of implementation, and the reasons why PIM is still very much worth the effort, were discussed by a panel of manufacturing, distribution and knowledge management experts at an Executive Roundtable hosted on Aug. 31 by EIS, a leading consulting firm focused on organizing information for business impact.

Among other things, big decentralized enterprises have to decide “what products belong in the PIM and what data is appropriate to master for those products,” Eliopulos said, and whether to use a “big bang” approach to implementation or one that is incremental. And they have to settle on the right governance structure.  

The roundtable discussion, “Product Information Management for Conglomerates: The Best Approach for Complex Decentralized Enterprises,” was led by Eliopulos and included Marguerite Eddy, Principal Data Architect at National Instruments, a producer of automated test equipment and virtual instrumentation software, and Jennie Yates, Manager, eCommerce Catalog and Content, at WESCO Distribution, an electronics distribution and services company.     

“PIM’s always a good idea,” said Yates. “It’s a very difficult journey to start, when you are looking at it from an enterprise-wide management point of view,” but the potential payoff is enormous. “It’s really part of that whole master data management [MDM], big data theory of reaping the benefits of having all of your product data in one place,” serving multiple parts of the enterprise.

“The true secret sauce in starting the journey,” Yates added, “is not to look at it as technical implementation,” which is certainly involved, but rather as a chance to understand the business processes of all affected entities and operations and identify the things that need to change. Through these conversations “you begin to develop your requirements to get a shared PIM throughout the organization that would be in everybody’s interest.”       

Eddy agreed. “We went through strategic sessions with stakeholders across the company to define what we meant by product and to determine the scope of what we were working with. And only then did we start looking at technology.”

“That upfront input,” Yates added, “defines the business process that’s going to support the PIM,” including change management and the commitment to provide more resources.  

The panelists also discussed the types of data that belong in the PIM, including product attributes; the considerations in deciding between the big bang and incremental transition approaches; the need for dual maintenance in making the shift from legacy systems; and the governance issues that can affect time to market.

The roundtable featured a real-time survey of the webinar attendees:  

  • When asked how they are using PIM in their organization, 20% said enterprise-wide as the system of record for all product content and 30% said across many business units or departments. But the remaining 50% said they don’t have a PIM system of any kind
  • When asked if they are using PIM for master data, 9% said they master all of their product data across all channels, 9% use such data for digital channels and 36% said PIM is one of a number of sources of product data. Another 45% said they did not use PIM for master data management
  • Finally, when asked if they could see their business using PIM as an MDM platform across all lines of business and subsidiaries, 17% said they are already doing just that “to great effect” and another 17% said they have plans and funding to follow suit within the next 12 months. Meanwhile, 33% said they are evaluating the various approaches and another 33% have no plans and are not interested
