The Potato Is No Longer A Side Dish—Just Think About Taking The Least Expensive Food With Great Nutritional Value And Turning It Into An Enjoyable, Tasty Meal!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 2013

Spokane, Wash. — Potatoes are one of those foods that people often have a love/hate relationship with, especially when it comes to baking them in the oven or on the barbeque.  They’re easy to love when they finally get cooked, so they can be loaded up with butter and all kind of other goodies.  On the other hand, they take too long to cook, the center can often be too hard and the skin sometimes tastes like dirt.

We happen to love potatoes.  That’s why for the last 13 years we’ve been testing, creating and putting together a fool-proof system to bake an evenly cooked potato in less time with a zesty, crispy edible skin.  You might even say that we have reinvented the method for baking the ultimate potato!

So who are we?  We are Leon and Kimberly Frechette, creators of Spud Spikes®, The Original Food-Grade Stainless Steel 6-inch Baking Potato Spikes, as well as our Gourmet Potato Skin Rubs and Everyday Seasonings (Pepper, Original Blend and Garlic)—all made in the U.S.A.!

Being in business for 36 years in both remodeling and cooking has helped us build a better product.  Although the so-called “potato nails” have been around for years, they don’t perform as designed because they are too short, very thin and are not healthy because they are made from aluminum or non–food-grade stainless steel.

Spud Spikes reduce the cooking time when inserted through the center lengthwise in the potato by transferring heat through the spike to the center of the potato, thus helping it to cook evenly from the inside out—whether you’re baking, grilling or barbequing.

As part of the manufacturing process, we have control over the products we bring to the market.  By creating a potato spike at the proper length and diameter and from high-grade 100% stainless steel, we have produced a food utensil that is safe and works as designed.

One question we get asked all the time is, “What stops me from going to my local hardware store to purchase nails?”  It’s simple.  Our grade of stainless steel and length cannot be purchased at your local hardware store.  The Spike Spikes product is not just a nail—it’s a food-grade stainless-steel food utensil.

Our Gourmet Original Blend Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning is used on the skin of the potato, along with olive oil, before baking, grilling or barbequing to deliver an edible, zesty skin, where most of the vitamins and nutrients are located.  We use sea salt to help achieve a crispy potato skin.  The seasoning is iodine-, gluten- and fat-free, and contains no MSGs, preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.  This is the healthiest gourmet seasoning on the market!

Can a potato be exciting?  You bet!  By using our new Baked Potato System, you can take an ordinary potato and give it some personality.  The real question is, do you want to eat a potato that looks like you just dug it up, or do you want a potato with a crispy skin, a tempting aroma and a presentation that looks so delicious that you can’t wait to devour it?

We are helping consumers eat healthier potatoes that taste better!  Potatoes are the number-one vegetable crop worldwide.  They help prevent cancer and control high blood pressure and diabetes.  We recommend eating the vitamin- and nutrient-dense skin.

  • Fiber moves cancer-causing compounds out before they cause harm.  The skin of a baked potato contains 20% of its nutritional value.
  • Choose cancer-fighting fats and avoid the bad—cook with olive oil.
  • Aluminum potato nails may cause aluminum to accumulate in the body, possibly even leading to osteoporosis or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Chemists have found that heating potatoes in a microwave produces significant levels of acrylamide, a chemical known to have caused nerve damage in people exposed to it (Stockholm University).
  • Garlic adds flavor and is a cancer-fighting punch of valuable nutrients.
  • One medium-sized potato with skin contains 45% of the daily value for Vitamin C and 10% percent of the daily value for Vitamin B6.  Potatoes contain more potassium (620 mg) than bananas, spinach or broccoli.  Most of the carbohydrates in potatoes are complex carbs, the body’s main energy source.  You get all of this goodness for just 110 calories with no fat, sodium or cholesterol!

Does our Baked Potato System really work?  Yes, it does!  Because Spud Spikes conduct oven heat into the center of your food, it speeds up the baking time.  The less time your oven runs, the more you save on your utility bills!  Enjoy delicious baked and roasted foods, not microwaved substitutes.  Reduced cooking time will depend on the potato variety, number of potatoes and method of cooking.  Our testing in a convention gas oven at 425ºF with our Baking Potato System yields six 5-inch potatoes in 40 to 45 minutes.

To achieve crispy, edible skins with a zesty flavor, rub or spray the potato skin with olive oil once the Spud Spikes have been inserted.  Next, sprinkle the oiled potatoes with our Gourmet Original Blend Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning.  To learn more about baking the ultimate potato, go to http://www.spudspikes.com/ccp0-display/baking_potatoes.html.

If you want quick, healthy meals, try our method!  If you follow these simple steps, you’ll find that Spud Spikes reduce baking time by up to 50% (translating into money savings!) and you will enjoy evenly cooked potatoes.

First, preheat the oven to 325 to 450°F (depending on the size and number of potatoes and the type of stove). Next, clean and dry the potato skins, pricking the skins a few times with a fork, and insert a Spud Spike lengthwise into each potato.

Next, spray the potato skin with olive oil followed by sprinkling them with our Gourmet Original Blend Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning.  Place the potatoes on a broiler rack sitting on a sheet pan covered with parchment paper and put the pan on the oven’s middle rack.  Turn the potatoes over halfway through the estimated baking time, and turn the pan 180 degrees as well.  Before turning, use a toothpick to see how easy it is to reach the spike by poking the potato.  This will help you judge your overall baking time.

Finally, when you think the potatoes are done, check to see whether you can remove the Spud Spikes without resistance by using an oven mitt and/or kitchen tongs.  If they come out too fast, the potatoes may be overdone.  With time and practice, you’ll learn how many potatoes you can cook at a time, their sizes and how long it will take.  You’ll also learn which baking method works best for you (i.e., conventional or convection oven or BBQ) and whether you prefer crispy or soft skin.

What can you do with leftover potatoes?  Place the potatoes in the refrigerator in an open dish covered with a paper towel once they cool down.  This will maintain the crispy skins.  Placing them in a plastic bag will only yield a soft, wet skin that doesn’t work well when reheating or cooking the leftover potatoes.  Recipe ideas can be found on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/potatonails.  Here are some favorite ideas for leftover potatoes:

  1. Twice Baked: You can reheat a baked potato by placing it back in the oven for about 25 minutes at 300°F.
  2. Twice Baked with Broccoli and Cheese: Whether the potato is twice baked or newly baked, it tastes great with broccoli and cheese placed into the center of the potato.
  3. Twice Baked with Mexican Four-Cheese Blend: Try putting some Mexican four-cheese blend over butter and our Gourmet Original Blend Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning on an open potato.
  4. Potato Wedges: Cut the potatoes into wedges, spray with olive oil and sprinkle with our Gourmet Garlic Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning.  Bake at 300°F for about 25 to 30 minutes, depending on how crispy you want them.
  5. Chili Baked Potato: Cut a hot baked potato into bite-size pieces and place it in a bowl with your favorite chili and cheese.
  6. Baked Potato Salad: Similar to the chili baked potato, except that once you place the bite-size potato pieces in the bowl, follow it up with chopped romaine lettuce.  Add chili and cheese on top of the lettuce.
  7. Breakfast Potatoes: Cut up some baked potatoes into bite-size pieces and place in a 10-inch skillet.  Sauté with olive oil on medium heat.  Add mushrooms, celery, red peppers and parsley, and season with our Gourmet Pepper Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning.
  8. Breakfast Potatoes with Eggs: Once your breakfast potatoes are at the desired texture, stir in some premixed eggs, being careful not to overcook the eggs.  Serve this simple dish with salsa.

Other uses for our Spud Spikes: Grill brats or sausages on the BBQ using Spud Spikes and reduce the cooking time by 50%.  After the nail is removed, the brat or sausage remains straight—a bonus if you plan to eat it in a bun!

Our Spud Spikes Baked Potato System, which retails for $24.99, contains four 6-inch food-grade stainless steel spikes, storage tube, and our 3.2-oz. Gourmet Original Blend Potato Skin Rub and Everyday Seasoning.  To learn more about other Spud Spikes products, visit www.spudspikes.com.

Camp Fire Takes National Stance in the Fight against Bullying

The Stand Up. Stand Out. Campaign encourages teens to embrace their unique qualities

There is an epidemic sweeping our country—a “one-size-fits-all” mentality whereby the message to teenagers is that they must “fit in” in order to succeed. The Stand Up. Stand Out. Campaign seeks to smash that mold and encourage teens to be proud of their differences—what makes them unique and important to the world.

Today, that message is being spread around the world through social media. Camp Fire, a national youth organization, is launching a viral video and national campaign featuring real teens talking about the hardships of being “different” and “unique”.

“I think the most alarming thing is the way teens feel when people say they are different,” said Hannah Hasselquist, Stand Up. Stand Out. campaign manager.  “Being unique is not a disease. It’s not something to be ashamed of. It’s beautiful and should be celebrated. That’s the message that needs to be spread..

Anyone can participate—parents, siblings, teachers, coaches, executives, anyone! The goal is for every teen to feel confident and comfortable with themselves—to recognize and embrace everything that makes them unique, and then stand up for others making the same journey.

Camp Fire believes in the dignity and worth of every individual—every teen deserves to feel confident and happy. Helping a young person become who they want to be takes time and encouragement. It takes paying attention to what sparks a passion.  With your help, we can help teens discover the exceptional people they are.

Stand Up. Stand Out. was created by Camp Fire’s National Youth Advisory Cabinet because, as teens, they see the effect of bullying first hand. The yearlong national campaign features a series of viral videos to spread the word.

Toronto Rap Star D’nme Breaks Down His Passion for Music and Explains Vision Behind ‘Can’t Nobody Do It My Way’

Written by admin on Jul 31st, 2013 | Filed under: Press Releases

PRESS RELEASE (7/31/2013)- Toronto Hip Hop artist D’NME gained nearly 1 million views for the video of his new single “Can’t Nobody Do It My Way” in its first week of release. While the numbers don’t lie, the title chosen for the single sparked lively conversation among his fans and Hip Hop media.  To give fans a “face-to-face” type of answer to their questions, D’NME sat down with StarForceHipHop.com to clarify the meaning behind the song and share some insight about his passion for music of all genres.

Canada’s rising hip hop star D’NME is catching the bullet train through the digital music world. His newest single, “Can’t Nobody Do It My Way,” materialized on high power urban music sites like StarforceHipHop.com and ThatCrack.com, while gaining feature articles with digital magazine outlets like The Hype Magazine and Hood Stars Magazine. In essence, we could be seeing the next Hip Hop phenomenon to flow out of the Canadian North.

Recently D’NME and G Unit member Lloyd Banks, one of the biggest mixtape rappers in history, both celebrated achieving gold certification for recent projects on DatPiff, a popular mixtape site.  D’NME’s golden goose was entitled “Guns & Roses” and received rave reviews by some of the top name DJs in the industry like DJ Smallz and DJ Green Lantern.

Can’t Nobody Do It My Way,” differs from the standard Hip Hop offerings of today; Combining rock and pop music influences within the track, and the signature D’NME rapid lyrical delivery, has created what is proving to be a well received offering from Canada’s “next to blow” Hip Hop star.

D’NME recently covered The Hype Magazine and in his interview, he describes his style:

My style changes depending on the record. Overall, I’d say I have a pretty dark sound, but if the record is lighter in regard to the beat I’m rapping on, the content is darker and edgier. My flow can be very rapid and in your face but overall, my style is hip hop. Even if I make a pop record, the way I rap and stay in the pocket of the beat is hip hop.”

D’NME…remember the name because it appears his music is going to come storming through your system like a hurricane. Moving rapidly, gaining steam, destroying the sub-standard music standing in his path, D’NME is the approaching musical storm.  Hip Hop media seems to have this artist on their “watch list” as his movement continues to grow and he delves into the crossover market as well with Rock and Pop feature appearances for his upcoming and as yet untitled album project.

Find out more on D’NME on his official website and his newest single, “Can’t Nobody Do It My Way” is available on iTunes. View the official video for the song on StarforceHipHop.com

AlgoRates.com Says Gold To Continue Downward Trend

Written by admin on Jul 30th, 2013 | Filed under: Press Releases

…By January… After Predicting Gold’s Decline, AlgoRates.com had sold the majority of their holdings prior to the downturn…

(NEW YORK, NY) – Thomas Wentworth, a senior strategist at Algo Capital, the financial house which operates AlgoRates.com, is predicting that gold will hit record lows in the near future. In late 2012, AlgoRates.com’s analysts correctly predicted the precious metal’s price decline and by January 2013, the fund had sold the majority of their gold holdings prior to this year’s downturn.

“Since 2008,” says Wentworth, “the United States Federal Reserve and other central banks have been printing trillions in currency in order to help add liquidity to their ailing economies.” This “stimulus”, also known as Quantitative Easing, depreciated the value of paper money because its quantity in the marketplace increased. “Thus,” says Wentworth, “central banks helped ignite the rush to gold as an asset whose value cannot be decreased by government policy or economic downturns.”

Indeed, the actions of global central banks stimulated an explosion in the value of gold, with the precious metal soaring to USD $1921 in 2011. Since then, global economies have partially rebounded from the worst of the financial crisis, and central banks in the United States and Europe have started to make references to the coming reduction of their monetary stimulus activities.

According to recent data, in June 2013, consumer confidence in the United States has jumped to its highest level in more than five years. In the same month, durable goods orders were higher than expected and new homes sales rose to their strongest level in nearly five years. These economic indicators also help explain the reduction in gold prices.

Predicting that economies worldwide would take a turn for the better and that Quantitative Easing would begin to wind down in 2013, Algo Capital market strategists believed that gold would lose some of its “safe heaven” appeal. They began divesting in gold in late 2012. Today, from its USD $1921 peak, gold has plummeted to a three year low of USD $1224 this month.

Is there still room for further depreciation of gold? Thomas Wentworth, who helped develop the industry’s leading algorithmic trading robot for AlgoRates.com, believes the answer is yes.

“We are positioned for the extension of the collapse of gold, with our analysis signaling that the plunge of gold has just begun and may carry on well into 2014.” In 2014, the United States Federal Reserve is expected to terminate its quantitative easing program altogether, thus halting the flow of cheap dollars into the market. Accordingly, gold may then fall below the USD $1000 level.

“There comes a time when an asset inflates and then deflates,” says the AlgoRates.com strategist. “Barring any dramatic economic or geo-political development, we see this as the beginning of gold’s deflation.”

“You Might Be a Narcissist If…” by Paul Meier, Cynthia Munz, and Lisa Charlebois
is a Book about Narcissism Awareness

Written by admin on Jul 30th, 2013 | Filed under: Press Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“You Might Be a Narcissist If…” was written by two psychotherapists and a psychiatrist with decades of both personal and professional experience with narcissism, the book is filled with many interesting to read stories that help readers understand what narcissism truly is and what they can do about it.

Narcissism, especially in its more subtle forms, is much more common than we may think and many of us have some of these characteristics. This book is filled with many interesting to read stories taken from the authors’ or their clients’ lives that clearly demonstrate examples of narcissists. A Narcissism Questionnaire and practical suggestions are given for dealing with narcissists whether it’s your spouse, a friend, a family member, a co-worker, or even yourself.

Does narcissism run in the family?
Are there different types of narcissism?
What are the most common narcissistic traits?

Find the answers to these and many more questions between the pages of the entertaining book, “You Might Be a Narcissist If…”.

Dr. Paul Meier is a psychiatrist who has treated hundreds of people with this personality trait and thousands who have been negatively impacted by narcissists. In 1993, he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show to discuss a book he had written about narcissists called Don’t Let Jerks Get the Best of You, and another book on codependency (about being addicted to having narcissistic friends or mates) called Love Is a Choice. Meier states that Narcissists are basically people who think the world revolves around them (or if it doesn’t, it should!).

A few years ago, Meier enjoyed a TV special based on the New York Times bestseller You Might Be a Redneck If…. So, shortly after that, he and some friends jokingly and spontaneously thought of some ideas for “You Might Be a Narcissist If…” and thus the book began.

Message from the Authors:

“We continually see numerous lives, marriages, and families, even churches, torn apart from the destructive forces of narcissism. However, what we know to be true…is that it is a rare person who intentionally sets out to destroy his own life or the lives of the people he loves. Until we each become more conscious of which attitudes, feelings and behaviors inadvertently hurt ourselves or others, we tend to go on for years repeating the same patterns…communicating in the same ways…not setting healthy boundaries, and so on… Life can become utterly frustrating and exhausting! However, when we know what the issues are, we can change. It is so invigorating to know that we don’t have to stay stuck…even if we’re not the one struggling with narcissism…we can change the way we relate to the people who do.”
